why? because i just got pulled over by one. this is probably the 3rd time this month alone i’ve been pulled over- a record i believe. why’d he pull me over? once again, modified exhaust.
for those of you who have modified exhausts on your car, you will want to read this because it’s to your benefit.
the cop was a captain. a high ranking officer. he told me that it’s illegal to modify the exhaust in any way- any way meaning it’s not factory. and he said specifically, not factory. i didn’t argue (don’t argue with cops), i just honestly admitted that i didn’t know that because another cop that pulled me over said it can, in fact, be legal. cops are trained to resume authority over a suspect so he’ll say that’s wrong. just go with the flow. if he tickets you, fight it, because this is what the law says:
27151. (a) No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor
vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise emitted
by the motor of the vehicle so that the vehicle is not in compliance
with the provisions of Section 27150 or exceeds the noise limits
established for the type of vehicle in Article 2.5 (commencing with
Section 27200). No person shall operate a motor vehicle with an
exhaust system so modified.
(b) For the purposes of exhaust systems installed on motor
vehicles with a manufacturer's gross vehicle weight rating of less
than 6,000 pounds, other than motorcycles, a sound level of 95 dbA or
less, when tested in accordance with Society of Automotive Engineers
Standard J1169 May 1998, complies with this section. Motor vehicle
exhaust systems or parts thereof include, but are not limited
nonoriginal exhaust equipment.
my exhaust is under 95 decibels (as most to all aftermarket exhausts are), it is compliant with smog as it’s cat-back, and my car is under 6,000 lbs. lol. far, far under 6,000 lbs.
to be fair, though, the cop asserted he was 100% accurate about what this law states… so giving him the benefit of the doubt, there’s probably a lot of laws he could be inaccurate about off the top of his head. ok, so maybe lying is a bit harsh.
i’m still gonna write the song though.

thanks Pat for the helpful tip: a guitar that “does not have scalloped bracing really restricts the tone. The HD-28 has the pre-war scalloped bracing which is a must have.”
the Recording King also has pre-war fully scalloped forward x-bracing, but yeah the overall quality of sound you might have to test in person.
just right now, i replaced the plastic pegs with rosewood pegs. i seemed to have lost a little bass, replaced with a cleaner sound. i find this setup a bit more enjoyable- but heck, who’s to say that’s not just my mind playing tricks on me. should i change the strings? i got an extra pack of Elixir’s lying around…
