not many i’ve talked to liked this film but i can say for sure now that whoever didn’t like this movie, has a weak imagination. and or, has never seen the original series. yeah the world/driving is inconceivable but that’s… that’s speed racer. if you can’t put that aside, then you don’t deserve to enjoy the genius of it. and it is genius: the comedy is hilarious, the drama is emotional, and the racing is speed racer by and by. in the original series, the racing had no structure of any kind- so i’m surprised they actually put thought into the “strategy” of speed’s driving. and although the strategy pertains mostly to the usage of the out-of-this-world technology, it had more thought go into it than fast and furious.
fast and furious. i’m really disappointed in people cuz more people i know liked fast and furious, a poor attempt at introducing viewers into underground drag racing with terrible acting and terrible action. speed racer’s acting performances were far above expectations- sure it featured better actors but there’s simply no excuse since the actors were forced to play their roles behind a green screen the entire time.
and while most critics believed this to be the wachowski brothers’ first major mistake- i personally feel this film to be their first work of art. i mean, the first matrix was good… but it was in the light of so many dark sci-fi films before it. i can honestly say, i’ve never seen a movie like speed racer before. did i mention it’s genius? i guess genius is never understood in its own time.
oh and also, this is the first movie where christina ricci is hot.
